The Steps in Cleaning Ivory Keys

Cleaning Ivory Keys

1. Apply a Clean Soft Cloth in Wiping the Keys

Ivory keys can quickly absorb chemicals and even water. These solutions have the potentials of discolouring and damaging the keys in the long run. Therefore, it is advisable to use soft, clean cloth in wiping the keys.

2. Dust the Ivory Keys with a  Soft Bristled-Paintbrush

If you want to dust the ivory keys, you can use a soft bristled-paintbrush to remove all dirt and debris. However, you should begin from the back and dust off the dirt to the front of the keys to prevent the particles from fastening within the keyboard.

3. Apply White Vinyl Eraser

Do you want to whiten the keys? The simple process to bleach the keys is by applying white vinyl eraser. You will gently and gradually rub the surface of the keys one after another, then, after the exercise, carefully remove all the pieces of eraser from within the keys.

Another quicker way to handle these keys includes using wood pad #0000 and fine steel in removing any yellow stain and ensure your device is thoroughly cleansed. Moreover, you should frequently expose your keyboard to direct sunlight to ensure it bleaches and whitens the keys. This step will also make the ivory brighter and cleaner.

4. Wear White Cotton Gloves on Your Hands

Before you start your cleaning exercise, ensure to cover your hands with white cotton gloves as this will help to protect those ivory keys from stains and dirt from your hands. You may use coloured gloves, but they may imprint colours on the keys. Therefore, it is better to apply white gloves to maintain the neatness of the keyboard.

You can take a half bowl of water and put some drops of liquid soap or detergent and then, with a damp white soft cloth, wipe the plastic keys on the keyboard carefully to remove oil and dirt.

2. Use Damp Soft White  Cloth or Cotton

Now, you should dip the soft cloth into the bowl of water and press out the liquid very well. This is very important to prevent water from touching the keys and damaging the piano in the process. After this, gently scrub the surface of the keyboard with the wet cloth to ensure the dust is wiped off from the system.

3. Begin Cleaning with the White Keys

It is advisable to begin cleaning with the white keys and does not use the same cloth to wipe off the black keys. Clean the keyboard by brushing the debris downwards; this pattern has a way of removing tiny particles from these plastic keys. If you intend brushing backwards, you will end up transferring the dirt from one key to another.

4. Clean Black Keys with Another Cloth

Prepare the same lathered solution using a mild detergent similar to the one you used in wiping off the white keys and then, use it with another clean, soft cloth to wipe the black keys as well. An excellent way to clean these black piano keys is by wiping them from front to back in that order. However, do it in a way it does not put dust or dirt back on the white keys.

5. Thoroughly Remove Contaminants from the Keys

After thoroughly cleaning the white keys and black keys, you should use a dry cotton cloth to wipe off the lathers and residues of soap and detergents from the keyboards. Anyway, to ensure there is no dirt whatsoever left on the piano, you should wipe from back to the front, now it should be on both keys to cleanse the device thoroughly.

6. Erase Fingerprints with Special Treatments

If you notice fingerprints on the keys and they seem difficult to erase, then, you can use special treatments to wipe them. You can prepare a special treatment with one part of vinegar and four parts of water. After that, take a soft white cloth, dip into the solution, and wring it very well to minimize the moisture content.   Begin to wipe off the keys one after another but ensure that a key dries off first before proceeding to another key. This is to prevent the vinegar from damaging any key and also open the keyboard for some time to allow the smell of the solution to dry off before covering the keys.

7. Ensure the Keyboard is Covered After Use

After the cleaning exercise, always cover the keyboard to avoid dirt getting into the spaces between the keys because they may affect the functionality of your instrument.
